Math Station #9: Literature Station
Pattern Bugs by Trudy Harris. (2001). Millbrook Press. (0761321071). Gr. pre-K to 1.
Various wacky insects create simple patterns in this fun children's book, and rhyming text demonstrates the same pattern. For example, the bee page shows an AAAB pattern through text, “Buzz-buzz-buzz-sip,” the colors of the striped bees--yellow, yellow, yellow, black--and the colored border--orange, orange, orange, yellow. This is a great way to use word play to reinforce what the children are learning in their pattern studies.

Pattern Fish by Trudy Harris. (2000). Millbrook Press. (0761317120). Gr. pre-K to 1.
More AB, ABB and other patterns here in fishy form. Children can see patterns on the fishy bodies, in the bubbles they emit, and in the underwater environment.

A-B-A-B-A: A Book of Pattern Play by Brian P. Cleary. (2010). Milbrook Press. (0822578808). Gr. K - 3.
Cleary's crazy cats show children how to make simple visual (shape-based, color-based) and numerical patterns. Students who are already semi-proficient or proficient readers will love this book, while those who are in the pre-literacy or emergent stages of reading will enjoy all the visual patterns.

Station Activity Description
These books can be used interchangeably while students read and look at them, and they can be used as models to practice their pattern building skills. I would suggest reading the books to the class first, to introduce the concept of building AB, AAB, ABB, and ABCD patterns, before introducing these stations.
Materials/ Activity #1: can be put into a large ziploc bag:
Materials/ Activity #1: can be put into a large ziploc bag:
- Crayola stamp pens
- bingo ink stampers
- assorted rubber stamps
- strips of paper (approx. 1.5” x 8”) or rolls of white register tape
- Students can create patterns on strips of paper.
- They can recreate the patterns they saw in the books, or try new ones of their own.
- They can challenge others to figure out what picture would come next in the pattern.
- Challenge more advanced children to develop more difficult patterns.
- Encourage children to label their patterns (AB, AAB, ABB, and ABC type patterns.)
_Materials/ Activity #2:
- Backyard Bug counters
- Recording paper
- Markers and/or crayons and/or colored pencils
- Children need to organize the bugs in a pattern to march in a parade.
- Ask them to try sorting by attribute first (color, bugs who fly, bugs who crawl, etc.)
- Record bug patterns on a recording sheet - try drawing the bugs or tracing them and then coloring them in.
- Encourage children to label their patterns (AB, AAB, ABB, and ABC type patterns).
_Materials/ Activity #3:
- Fun Fish Counters
- Recording paper
- Markers and/or crayons and/or colored pencils
- Children need to organize the fish in a pattern as they swim together.
- Ask them to try sorting by attribute first (color, # of fins, big, small, etc.)
- Record fish patterns on a recording sheet - try drawing the fish or tracing them and then coloring them in.
- Encourage children to label their patterns (AB, AAB, ABB, and ABC type patterns).
Differentiation Suggestions:
Assessment: Formative and Summative:
Resources:

- Provide laminated examples of patterns (AB, AAB, ABB, and ABC type patterns).
- Provide sorting circles to help children remember how to sort by attribute before building a pattern.
- Provide a baggie with foam A and B letters (or letter magnets) to help children label their patterns.
Assessment: Formative and Summative:
- I Can/ recording sheets
- Student drawings: drawings of labelled bug and fish patterns
- Student drawings: strips of labelled patterns
